Any grammar enthusiasts in HiH that would like to help a poor soul? XD

I'm currently proof-reading the thesis and I'm having a slight issue with dashes. I will admit right away that dashes are not my strong suit XD Dashes and semicolons are in a conspiracy to ruin my life, I think.

In any case, I've been using the em dash. Example:

It is the idea that all works of literature must have a moral message—and that this message is what the work of literature should be judged by—that ruins the artof literature, according to Poe.

Okay, blah, it doesn't seem that LJ wants to make an em dash, but if you click the wiki link above there are examples.

Anyhow. My supervisor wants a space between the dash and the word, but I'm pretty sure I've been taught that there shouldn't be. AND NOW I'M CONFUSED.

Any dash experts that can help me out?
